The other day, laura, who is running a small business selling t-shirts and stickers, came to visit me at my office while I was sitting in the back. We got to chatting, and I asked her to share what she thinks of the marketing industry. She thinks of marketing as something that is very much in the “middle ground” between marketing and advertising.
laura loves the word marketing and the way it has evolved through the years, but she admits that she has never really put much thought into marketing herself. And she loves that there are other people who do it for a living that could perhaps help her take her marketing to the next level.
Yes, there are lots of marketing folks out there who could help you take your marketing to the next level. And, of course, there are plenty of marketers willing to help you make your marketing more effective.
There are so many marketing gurus out there. I think it’s because marketing is such a wide field that there are a lot of different opinions on what makes for effective marketing. Some marketing gurus would advise you to go for something that’s a little less “mainstream”. Others would talk about all the different ways that you can “break out” of your niche, or how you can create a buzz in your niche.
For example, I see a lot of people who tell me to do my marketing the old fashioned way. They tell me I should be sending out newsletters, doing blog posts, or doing contests. I agree, but I think the main reason I’m doing this marketing is because I have something to say, and I don’t want to do something that’s just going to make me look bad.
Thats exactly what I tell people, and I tell them I also have something to say, but I don’t want to say it. I wanted to explain how I am doing this marketing, not just say I am doing it. I do it because I think its the thing to do, and I do it because I think it’s the thing that will make me sound like I am someone special and unique.
Yes, I am going to get in trouble for saying this, but that’s why I’m doing it. If the only reason you’re reading this is because you want to know what Im doing, and I’m just going to say I’m doing marketing and that Im doing it because I think its the thing to do, and I think its the thing that will make me sound like I am someone special and unique, then you’re already doing it wrong.
