How far does your doctor get? When we watched a video of a healthy man talking to a medical doctor about his health, we didn’t know if he was sick. It was a pretty cool situation.
Cowley County is small and rural, so it’s not surprising that it’s still relatively unknown to the outside world. However, it’s not entirely unheard of. It’s been in the news a few times over the last few years. In 2008, the local health department was forced to shut down after using a helicopter to kill a man who had attempted to kill a local doctor. It was only after the doctor went public that he was given a second chance at life.
The town was forced to close after one of the doctors was murdered. In 2012, the town of Cowley was hit with a $5 million dollar fine for mis-using state funds to pay for a new health center. The fine was paid with $20,000 donated by the local health department. The state of Missouri has since passed legislation to require every community to have a health department (along with all other local government bodies) by 2020.
The health department, like most public agencies in the United States, is funded by the state. The city of Cowley was forced to close, just like the rest of the states. The state of Missouri has since pushed to mandate that every community has a health department by 2020. The Cowley health department’s board of directors included the town’s mayor, city council members, and state senator.
If you don’t want a health department to be in the city, consider the city council’s proposal to remove the health department from the county health department for the purpose of a permanent health overhaul. It’s essentially the same as a city council member being eliminated from a county health department if the health department is not in the county.
It will all be the same. The Cowley health department will be eliminated. Now that the health department is being eliminated, what part do the health department staffs have? They don’t. The city, county, and state health departments have a long way to go to be ready to serve the community of Cowley.
